If you are acutely ill or experiencing medical or cardiac conditions that require cardiac or telemetry monitoring, you may be admitted to Markham Stouffville Hospital’s Cardiology Unit. Telemetry is a device that continuously monitors your electrical heart rhythm and rate, and automatically transmits this information to a central monitor.

About the Cardiology Unit

Patients that are admitted to the Cardiology Unit come from the Emergency Department, inpatient units, clinics, or are transferred directly from Uxbridge Hospital. We work closely with our regional partners, such as Southlake Regional Health Centre, to provide our patients with the best cardiac care.

Our goal in the Cardiology Unit is to engage you and your family by offering patient-centred care using best practices. On admission and throughout your length of stay, you and your family can expect to engage with team members to discuss and review your plan of care and discharge planning.

The Health Care Team in the Cardiology Unit

The interprofessional team in the Cardiology Unit includes unit secretaries, physicians, nurses/nurse practitioners, physician assistants, patient support assistants, pharmacists, social workers, patient flow coordinators, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and rehab assistants. The team also includes a Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) home and community care coordinator, speech language pathologist, registered dietitian, and registered respiratory therapist.

Enhanced Cardiac Care Unit

Our Enhanced Cardiac Care (ECC) Unit supports and treats patients who currently have or have experienced various conditions of the cardiovascular system such as acute coronary syndrome, (ACS) heart attack, angina, and heart failure. The ECC can also care for you if you need advanced diagnostics, interventional procedures and device implantations, or if you’re recovering from cardiac procedures such as angioplasty or pacemaker insertion.

The unit provides enhanced bedside monitoring, including telemetry. You will also receive verbal and written information about your care plan and self care.

We use a team approach, comprised of registered nurses, social workers, physicians, registered dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and a pharmacist. Your care as an inpatient, and your follow-up care, will be managed by our team.
