You may need an X-ray as a result of illness or injury, or when a physician suspects a medical problem that cannot easily be detected with a routine physical examination. Visiting the Emergency Department may also necessitate an X-ray. If you require an X-ray while visiting the Emergency Department, this imaging will be completed while you are still at the hospital.

Your X-ray will be performed by a medical radiation technologist (MRT) specialized in radiology technology. Medical radiation technologists are allied health professionals trained in patient care and imaging techniques that use ionizing radiation to obtain images. To learn more, please see this link for the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario.

Radiologists are physicians with specialist training in the interpretation of all imaging and providing consultation to the referring physician.

Oak Valley Health offer digital X-ray services. This current X-ray technology allows us to use less radiation when imaging our patients.

To have an X-ray, your ordering provider needs to fill out a referral form.

Before Your X-ray

Please do not wear jewelery or perfume on the day of your test.

When taking X-rays, it is important to ensure there are no other dense objects (zippers, buttons, wires, jewelery) covering the body in the region of the X-ray. For this reason, you may be asked to change into a hospital gown before your X-ray.

For some specialty X-rays preparation is required. It is important that you follow the instructions provided. Please click here to contact our scheduling team and confirm these instructions or see below for general outlines.

  • Upper GI (Barium Swallow):
Do not eat or drink after midnight on the day of the appointment, except only what is needed to swallow necessary medications.

Children under the age of 12 years are not permitted to accompany a patient to this appointment.
