Markham Stouffville Hospital is dedicated to providing you an excellent inpatient surgical stay. We provide full support for surgical patients who are required to stay overnight in hospital.

We have two surgical units that provide comprehensive postoperative care, each with its own family waiting rooms for your comfort. The surgical units are open 24 hours a day.

Our health care team includes surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses, personal support workers, respiratory technologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, integrated care coordinators, pharmacists, unit clerks, social workers, and volunteers.

Visiting the inpatient units

Visiting inpatient surgery is flexible to meet your needs. You and your family can speak with your nurse to plan and co-ordinate visiting times. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times for everyone’s safety.

Postoperative care

Markham Stouffville Hospital provides individual, customized care to accommodate the diverse needs of our patients and the demographics of our community. If you are planning on requesting specific room accommodation, e.g., private or semiprivate rooms, we will make every effort to accommodate the request based on bed availability on the day of your surgery. Our health care team will work with you to develop a treatment program that will accommodate your needs.

Pain control

Postoperative discomfort is normal and is managed by a variety of pain control methods. We have an advanced practice pain nurse on staff who will create a plan to keep you as comfortable as possible. Your surgeon and health care team will select the method that is best for you, depending on your physical condition and the type of surgical procedure that you had done. A member of the acute pain service team or a member of the nursing staff caring for you will provide you with educational material on the pain control method that has been chosen for you.

Diet

Good nutrition is essential to a successful postoperative recovery. Our nursing staff will assess your dietary requirements and cultural preferences. If needed, a dietary assessment will be organized to assist with your dietary planning.

Wound care

Your postoperative incision and dressing care will be managed by the nursing staff while you are hospitalized. If required, a wound care specialist will support the team.

Patient education

From the preoperative assessment before surgery and through the postoperative phase, you will be provided with educational material, personal teaching, and valuable information to improve your surgical experience and outcome.

Going home after your stay

Our patient flow coordinator will begin planning for your discharge with you when you start your surgical journey preoperatively. The health care team will work with you and/or your family to help you return to the comfort of your own home as soon as possible.

Discharge time is between 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise instructed. Please make arrangements with your ride to pick you up at this time. We will schedule transportation at your cost if you require assistance.
