Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital is one of the first community hospitals in Ontario to offer a rapid access clinic for low back pain (formerly known as the Interprofessional Spine Assessment and Education Clinic – or ISAEC – program).

Our rapid access clinic provides a targeted approach to help manage lower back pain. The program is available to people over 18 years old with persistent low back pain and/or related leg symptoms such as pain, numbness, or tingling for between six weeks and a year.

We are proud to have Dr. Kevin Koo, surgeon lead for the low back spine program for the region, as part of our interprofessional team.

During the assessment, our team will ask you questions about your condition and medical history and examine your back. They will explain likely causes of your low back pain and create a plan to help you better manage your pain and improve your mobility. They will educate you about your condition and recommend any additional treatment.

If needed, the team will refer you on to the program practice lead who will assess you, order appropriate diagnostic imaging, or arrange a consultation with a surgeon.

The surgical assessment clinic aims to set up your assessment, anaesthetic and medical consults, education, laboratory tests, and imaging all in one day.

Depending on your situation, we can provide short-stay spine surgery (one to two nights in hospital). Spine surgery is not usually a same-day surgery.
