Orthopaedics includes surgery of the spine and joints such as hips, knees, ankles, feet, and shoulders. At Oak Valley Health, our compassionate and skilled surgical team performs many different types of orthopaedic surgeries in state-of-the-art operating rooms using the most up-to-date surgical techniques.
Orthopaedic and Joint Assessment Centre (OJAC)
Our Orthopaedic and Joint Assessment Centre (OJAC) located at Markham Stouffville Hospital provides patients with fast access to an interdisciplinary team. The hospital is the first in Ontario to provide orthopaedic care under the Ministry of Health’s rapid access centre (RAC) model to people with hip and knee, lower back/spine, shoulder, and foot and ankle joint issues.
The RAC model offers quick consultations – usually within two weeks after a referral is received from the family physician – with a skilled advance practice physiotherapist who can assess if the individual is a candidate for surgery.
If surgery is the right option, the procedure is usually scheduled within two months. And if surgery is not the best treatment, the patient also can be quickly referred to another practitioner, such as a physiotherapist or sports medicine physician.
In addition, our orthopaedic patient navigator supports patients and families throughout their surgical journey, including 90 days after surgery. The navigator is available to answer questions and schedule any follow-up appointments. For same-day surgery patients, follow-up appointments can be conducted from home through a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Patients coming for surgery can also view the your surgical journey and day of surgery pages that include important information, such as how to prepare for surgery and what to do/where to go when arriving.
