From going above and beyond the call of duty, to the many little things done each and every day, the Honoured to Care Awards celebrate how our people are living our values – demonstrating respect, trust, commitment, compassion, and courage across our organization.

Congratulations to our winners!

Respect

John Principe (he/him), registered nurse, short stay

What John’s nominator had to say:

“This nurse is what I would call someone who isn’t just doing his job! I am sure he had no idea what he had done for me. He gave me back my humanity, my dignity. I wasn’t just the hip replacement in bed, who had to stay an extra night. I was a human being who had been in distress, feeling inadequate. I will never forget his professionalism and how much he cared for me as a patient.”

Trust

Dr. Sam Babak (he/him), medical oncologist

What Dr. Babak’s nominator had to say:

“He has built trust by truly taking the time to listen to my concerns and provide me with honest answers. Everything he has told me has been very clear and accurate as to what I can expect from my treatment plan. When we meet, I feel like he has all the time in the world for me, although I know he has a very busy workload. He answers my questions thoroughly and I never feel rushed. He always makes me feel like an individual rather than just a number. He has advocated for me to be seen by further specialists to ensure that I am getting the best treatment possible, which I so appreciate.”

Commitment

Allan Kelly (he/him), manager, energy and infrastructure, plant maintenance

What Allan’s nominator had to say:

“His insight and ability to bolster the electrical infrastructure exemplifies the values we hold dear, and his positive attitude and commitment to excellence serves as an inspiration to others. These initiatives collectively aim to enhance hospital infrastructure reliability, minimize downtime, and ensure continuous and reliable power supply to critical systems. His commitment to excellence and continuous improvement ensures a robust foundation for providing superior health care services.”

Compassion

Stacey Thorpe, Anousha Ross, Naomi Taylor (she/her), and Tayler Akyeampong (she/her), registered nurses, Emergency

What their nominator had to say:

“I received a call from my oldest son and some pictures that my little one was having a suspected serious allergic reaction to something. I called 911 and asked them to bring my son to the Emergency Department at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Being on other side as the recipient of care is so hard. I cannot tell you how thankful and grateful we are for this team of nurses. The care we received was truly so representative of our mission and vision. These individuals honestly deserve awards for the care they provide day after day. I am so privileged and honoured to work with such stellar individuals. I am so proud to call them my colleagues, at my community hospital.”

Courage

Jade Gray, patient care manager, Emergency

What Jade’s nominator had to say:

“Jade has the courage to care deeply for patients and families, while balancing the needs of staff and supporting colleagues in a busy department. Jade drives extraordinary patient experience by connecting with patients to understand what matters to them, and when responding to patient complaints, does so with openness and humility.”
