If you plan to have your baby boy circumcised, it should ideally be performed within four to 14 days after birth. This can help minimize bleeding and complications. However, the procedure may be performed as early as 24 hours after birth and before your baby is one month old.
Circumcision procedures are not covered under OHIP. The current cost of the circumcision procedure is $425. Price is subject to change.
Appointment information
This is a surgical procedure; you are required to arrive 30-45 minutes ahead of your scheduled procedure time.
Prior to leaving your home, give the baby 0.5ml of infant Tylenol, Tempra or generic infant acetaminophen. This can be bought over the counter at your local pharmacy.
Feed the baby just before leaving home and not again until after the procedure. Do not feed once you arrive at the hospital as it may result in cancelling the procedure.
Do not use any Vaseline or diaper creams on the day of the appointment.
Bring a change of clothes and an extra diaper.
The clamp used is called a Gamco or Mogen clamp
Anaesthesia: a local anaesthesia called lidocaine + bupivacaine is injected prior to the procedure
Patients must meet the criteria before they can be booked: under 30 days, under 10 lbs, discharged from the hospital
Ideally, circumcisions are done between 4 – 14 days after birth and baby must be less than 10 lbs (4535 g)
Patients can be as early as 2 days old as long as they are over 5 lbs (2267.9 g) if infant is under 5 lbs please call the clinic do discuss eligibility
If a patient is over 30 days old (under 10 lbs) and was premature, please call the clinic to inquire if your baby is eligible for the procedure
