Your will is a trusty way to ensure that your family is well taken care of but you can also use it to help others in your community, through a charitable bequest. Your will is a convenient way of making a gift of lasting value to your favourite charity. It may allow you to make a larger gift than you might normally be able to afford. Gifts made by will are deemed to have been made in the year of death. Therefore, a charitable tax credit is received by the estate and can offset any tax owing from the estate.
Your gift will strengthen the long-term financial security of Uxbridge Hospital and will ensure that it has the resources needed to provide the best health care possible now and in the future. There are several ways you can create a lasting legacy. The option you choose depends on your individual circumstances and your financial objectives.
The most common options include:
Bequests: An easy way to leave a legacy is a bequest where you remember the Uxbridge Hospital Foundation in your will. A bequest has no financial impact on your current standard of living because it is realized after your death. Your bequest will result in a charitable tax benefit for your estate. You can provide cash, securities and other property or set aside a specific amount or percentage of your estate.
Life insurance policies: A gift of life insurance, properly structured, has many advantages. When paid directly to the hospital, life insurance is not subject to probate or executor fees. Your regular payments entitle you to charitable tax receipts and tax savings. Whether a new policy or an existing one, arranging to have the owner and beneficiary as the Uxbridge Hospital Foundation will ensure a charitable tax receipt can be issued for the cash value contained in the policy, as well as any premiums paid thereafter.
Gifts of Securities: Donating publicly traded stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or other securities is a tax-smart way to support Uxbridge Hospital Foundation. You can donate directly by transferring the securities electronically from your brokerage account to Uxbridge Hospital Foundation’s brokerage account or sell the stocks and donate the cash proceeds. By donating the stocks directly, you will be exempt from paying tax on the capital gains and receive a donation receipt for the fair market value of your appreciated stocks based on the market closing price on the day Uxbridge Hospital Foundation takes legal receipt of your donated stocks into our brokerage account.
Registered retirement plans: Registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and registered retirement income funds (RRIFs) provide an excellent opportunity to make a significant charitable gift.
You can make a future gift to the hospital while greatly reducing taxes by naming the Uxbridge Hospital Foundation as a full or partial beneficiary of your excess retirement funds that remain after your lifetime. A charitable receipt will be issued for the full value of the proceeds and the resulting tax credit can help offset the amount of estate taxes as well.
Real estate: Gifts of real estate can be donated, resulting in larger gifts than could be funded out of cash assets. There can be significant tax benefits to the estate.
