Our Emergency Department at Markham Stouffville Hospital is divided into zones depending on the severity of health issues. These are called the green, yellow, orange, and blue/red zones.
The Green Zone in the Emergency Department
If you have a less complex condition such as cuts, sprains, or minor head injury, you will be assigned to the green zone.
The Yellow Zone in the Emergency Department
If you have a minor-to-moderate condition such as abdominal pain or mild breathing difficulties, you will go to the yellow zone. In this area, stretchers are only used for assessments and certain treatments. After you are seen by a health care provider, you may be asked to return to the yellow zone waiting room for further assessments, tests, and results.
The Orange Zone in the Emergency Department
If your issue is more complex such as severe dehydration, breathing problems, or if you have a complex medical history, you will be placed in the orange zone. You may need to stay longer and require a stretcher. You will be assessed by a nurse and physician and may require blood tests, X-rays, or medications.
The Blue/Red Zone in the Emergency Department
If your issue is still more complex and may require resuscitation, ongoing medical care, or closer observation, you will be assigned to the blue/red zone. Some examples include heart attacks, severe breathing problems, traumas, cardiac arrests, or active seizures. Also, if you require heart or frequent vital sign monitoring, you will typically be placed here. You will be seen by a nurse and physician and may also see other members of our team such as a respiratory therapist, depending on your condition.
