The Breast Health Centre (BHC) at Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) is a model of patient-centred care, equipped with the most advanced tools and an expert team of health care specialists.
“With the community rapidly growing, we knew we had to expand our clinic to be able to continue offering our services in a space that met the needs of our patients,” says Al Hamzeh, patient care manager, Oncology Centre.
“We are thrilled to open our new Centre that has 3,000 sq. ft. and provides all breast health services under one roof.”
Renovations of the BHC started in August 2021. Less than a year later, the Centre moved into its new space and opened its doors to the community on Monday, May 16. The new space has six consult rooms, one family meeting room, one nurse assessment room, and two dictation spaces for physicians. The new centre will improve the flow and traffic within the clinic for the over 4,000 patients that visit each year.
The Centre was designed to be a unique healing space promoting calmness. It boasts beautiful wall wraps depicting nature and water around the centre and in the exam rooms, modern and natural lighting throughout, and a fireplace in the waiting room.
“Coming to the Breast Health Centre may cause some of our patients to feel anxious,” says Al. “We see a wide range of patients with a variety of breast related health concerns, not only for cancer treatment. We wanted to make sure that when you enter our doors, you feel calm and confident that you are receiving the safest and highest-quality care.”
The new Breast Health Centre was made possible thanks to the generosity of our donors, especially the Wright Family, and the important work of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation.
Services Offered
The Breast Health Centre offers nursing assessment, mammogram, ultrasound biopsy, surgeon consult, surgery if needed, and patient education resources. We have also partnered with the Ontario Breast Screening Program, which includes the new high risk screening for women who are at higher risk for breast cancer.
Our health care providers include a team of pathologists, family physicians, nurses, mammography technologists, radiologists, ultrasound technologists, surgeons, social workers, coordinators, unit secretaries, and volunteers trained in the needs associated with our patients. Surgeons are specially trained doctors who can surgically remove breast cancer cells or tumours if needed.
