Meet Winston Li, a nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) at Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital. As someone who thrives in a fast paced environment and always looks forward to the unexpected, the ED is the perfect fit for Winston. Although he enjoys the odd quiet day on the unit – a rare sight these days, the hustle and bustle keeps him on his toes.

Winston was looking for a change when he decided to apply to Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital four years ago. “I had heard very good things about the hospital and when I arrived, I found myself working with great people and it was just the change I needed.”

Team Work Makes the Dream Work

The pandemic has been a difficult time for everyone, and as a front-line nurse in the ED Winston has seen it all, including the resiliency of the entire team. “We’re two years in and a lot of people are feeling burnt out but we support each other, the doctors, nurses, environmental staff, porters – we all play a role and go above and beyond to make sure everyone feels supported. It’s more important than ever to check in with our colleagues, friends and family.” With another COVID wave upon us and an even busier ED, everyone tries to find time to help each other – it’s all about team work

Working almost six days a week, Winston finds joy in helping people. “The satisfaction I feel when patients go home with a smile and feeling better is what I enjoy most about my job,” says Winston. “Sometimes kids come in crying but when they leave happy and feeling better with their parents, it makes my 12 hour shift so worth it.”

With a busy work schedule, Winston doesn’t miss a beat; not even on his day off. You can catch Winston in the kitchen perfecting his favourite dish, jerk chicken with rice and peas, going to the gym, watching the Raptors and busting a move!
