Nourishing hearts with compassion and care for the last 34 years

Imagine finding solace in the warmth of a comforting meal during your time at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Meet Karen Julien, a compassionate heart within the food services operations at the hospital. For an incredible 34 years, since Markham Stouffville Hospital (MSH) opened its doors, Karen has poured her heart and soul into every meal she prepares and serves patients, nourishing not just bodies but spirits, too.

Karen’s role encompasses a myriad of responsibilities, from setting up the beltline and fulfilling tray tickets to preparing meals and ensuring accurate and timely delivery and pickup of patient meals. She finds immense joy in serving patients, relishing the opportunity to brighten their day with a warm cup of coffee or tea and a smile.

“I find fulfillment in the small gestures,” says Karen. “Whether it’s opening a dessert or simply lending a helping hand, knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s day is incredibly rewarding.”

One memorable encounter exemplifies Karen’s impact beyond her job description. Recognizing a patient in distress, Karen offered a simple yet profound gesture of kindness, reminding the patient about the power of positivity and resilience. Her genuine care left a lasting impression on the patient, who later sought Karen out in her department upon discharge to express her gratitude for Karen’s wisdom and empathic nature.

“I’ve learned that a little kindness goes a long way,” shares Karen. “Whether it’s a word of encouragement or a simple conversation, I strive to make a positive impact on each person I encounter,” says Karen with a beautiful smile and shine in her eyes.
