Following the exciting announcement of Uxbridge Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU) late last year, we are proud to welcome the first two family medicine residents to the program alongside University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

These residents are part of University of Toronto’s Family Medicine Residency Program and will complete their comprehensive two-year training in both Uxbridge and Markham. Based in Uxbridge, they will establish their own clinic hours and provide primary care to patients in the community. Supervised by experienced faculty physicians and working closely with hospital teams, each resident will build and manage a practice of up to 250 patients.

“The arrival of residents not only enhances patient care in our community but also revitalizes our rural health teams with new energy and emerging best practices,” says Dr. Aisha Husain, Site Director for Uxbridge FMTU. “Our goal is to inspire these future family doctors to stay and build their careers here by showing them just how fulfilling rural and community-based family medicine can be.”

Residents will gain valuable experience in various care settings, including Uxbridge Hospital’s ward and Emergency Department, as well as at Markham Stouffville Hospital where they will rotate through Surgery, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, and Paediatrics.

“This is an exciting time for education at Oak Valley Health,” says Lisa Harper, our Senior Director, Academics, Research, and Medical Affairs. “We are thrilled to officially launch this program with our first cohort of family medicine residents in Uxbridge.

“Training physicians locally brings immediate benefits for patient care today — and helps secure a sustainable future for family medicine by growing the next generation of physicians committed to community-based care.”

Meet the inaugural residents

Melanie, who completed her medical degree in Ireland at University College Dublin, is excited to join the community.

“I’m especially looking forward to getting to know my patients and being part of their stories over time, because that’s what I love most about family medicine,” says Melanie. “I feel extremely fortunate to be joining such a supportive faculty and learning in a community that feels welcoming and close-knit.”

Jonathan, a graduate of McMaster University, brings a passion for integrated, community-based care.

“I’m excited to start my residency at the Uxbridge site while also being able to learn and practice at the Markham site,” says Jonathan. “The Markham and Uxbridge sites offer a diverse patient population, outstanding faculty support, and meaningful opportunities to engage with the communities I have deep connections with — all of which align perfectly with my goals.

“I look forward to establishing my family medicine home base in Uxbridge and to providing compassionate, high-quality care to my future patients.”
