Our dedication to education is central to delivering top-quality care and attracting talented health care professionals. This year, our annual Academic Week, September 23 to 27, 2024, reflects that commitment, focusing on the theme Lifelong learning in health care: advancing skills and knowledge across the lifespan which underscores the need for collaborative, multidisciplinary care to improve patient outcomes.

By embedding continuous learning into everything we do, we’re creating an environment that nurtures growth and strengthens our ability to recruit and retain exceptional health care professionals.

The health care field is rapidly evolving, with new technologies, treatments, and research continuously reshaping how we care for patients. To stay ahead, we prioritize ongoing education, offering staff opportunities to enhance their skills and advance professionally. This approach not only fosters a culture of innovation but also ensures that our teams are prepared to stay on the pulse of modern health care.

“We know that investing in education is investing in our people, investing in our community, and investing in the future of patient care,” says Tracie Scott, director of Interprofessional Education and Practice. “Academic Week is a key initiative that equips our professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to excel, while also supporting their career development and celebrating their successes.”

From a variety of enriching activities, including workshops, masterclasses, a keynote presentation on the vital role of teaching in health care, and a Patient and Family Education Fair, Academic Week showcases our commitment to partnering with patients, families, and the broader community to enhance health literacy. The fair each year includes experts from both the hospital and community partner organizations, and underscores the importance of empowering patients and their families to take an active role in their health care journey through a collaborative approach to treatment and care.

By building partnerships and supporting health literacy, we strive to improve outcomes and ensure the community is well-equipped to make informed health decisions.

In an increasingly competitive health care landscape, providing robust educational opportunities is essential to attracting top talent. Prospective employees are drawn to organizations that prioritize professional development and continuous learning. By highlighting our educational initiatives, through Academic Week, we position ourselves as an employer of choice for those seeking to advance their careers while contributing to high-quality patient care.

Through the integration of education into our People Plan, which stems from the larger organizational Strategic Plan, we ensure that new hires have access to ongoing learning opportunities. From mentorship programs to partnerships with academic institutions and certification courses, our staff are empowered to grow and stay at the forefront of their fields.

Our focus on education plays a crucial role in keeping our talented professionals engaged and motivated. Lifelong learning allows staff to explore new areas of interest, preventing burnout and keeping them energized about their work. By embedding education and opportunity for development into every stage of an employee’s journey, we create an environment where people want to stay and grow.

Academic Week is more than a celebration of education—it’s a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to excellence in patient care and professional growth. By fostering an environment where learning is a priority, we not only enhance the skills of our team but also build a foundation for collaborative, integrated care that benefits both our staff and the patients we serve.
