We are proud to advance medical research through clinical trials, bringing innovation closer to home at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Uxbridge Hospital, and Reactivation Care Centre — while continuing to deliver safe, high-quality, and integrated care to our communities.

Why clinical trials matter

Clinical trials are essential to medical progress, says Stephen Mann, a manager in our Office of Research. Every breakthrough — from cancer therapies to vaccines — begins with a clinical trial.

“These studies test new treatments and help determine the safest and most effective ways to care for patients,” says Stephen. “They also offer early access to innovative therapies and help improve outcomes for future generations.”

The role of community hospitals

While research is often associated with large academic centres, community hospitals like Markham Stouffville Hospital and Uxbridge Hospital play a vital role. Our strong patient relationships and diverse populations ensure that research is inclusive and reflective of real-world communities.

By integrating clinical trials into everyday care, we bring innovation directly to our patients — without the need to travel far. We are proud to contribute to research that not only improves care here, but across the country.

Introducing CANTRAIN

To support our growing Research program, we are now using CANTRAIN — the CANadian Consortium of Clinical Trial TRAINing platform. This national initiative offers online training, hands-on learning, and expert mentorship to help build research skills.

“By adopting CANTRAIN, we’re equipping our teams with the tools they need to conduct high-quality clinical trials and bring more research opportunities to our hospitals,” says Stephen.

Building the future of care

Through clinical trials, we’re not just caring for patients today — we’re shaping the future of medicine.
