Meet Herbeisha Williams, communications clerk within the IT department at Oak Valley Health. Herbeisha has been at Oak Valley Health for almost eight years, beginning her career here as a porter.
Herbeisha deals with a variety of things throughout her day from answering calls from patients and families, making overhead announcements, communicating codes, posting staff resources on our intranet, and more.
“I think the best part about my job is interacting with people,” says Herbeisha. “Whether it be hearing a sigh of relief when I’m able to direct them to the correct location within the hospital, or a heartfelt ‘thank you’ when I can provide clarity to their situation. It feels good knowing that amidst whatever crisis or situation they’re in, I’ve helped them in some capacity.”
Herbeisha is also a member of Oak Valley Health’s Network for Black Employees (NBE). The NBE is a voluntary, staff-led group that centres Black voices and focuses on varying matters pertinent to staff, physicians, students, and volunteers within the Black community at Oak Valley Health.
“Being a member of the NBE means I get to be part of something bigger,” says Herbeisha. “It means I get to play an integral part in helping to make decisions that both directly and indirectly impact members of the Black community – my community.”
Oak Valley Health’s NBE holds a variety of activities and events throughout the year, though an emphasis is placed on Black History Month, when several events are held for staff with an emphasis on celebration, learning, and meaningful discussions.
“The NBE and groups like it prioritize creating an inclusive environment through identifying systemic inequalities and striving to constantly improve the organization’s workplace culture,” says Herbeisha. “When you leave room for a diverse range of perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds, it lends for a broader range of ideas, solutions, and innovations that ultimately benefits the organization as a whole.”
In addition to the NBE, Herbeisha is also a member of Oak Valley Health’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee, and the Pride committee.
“I joined the NBE, EDI, and Pride committees to help make our workplace more representative and equitable; by extension, this creates a more inclusive and welcoming environment to work and receive care in,” says Herbeisha. “I have always been passionate about creating safe spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging, feels comfortable to be their whole self, and feels that their voice matters.”
Outside of work, Herbeisha keeps busy by spending time with family. She has a niece and twin nephews who always keep her on her toes! She also enjoys date nights with her partner, who she enjoys finding finding unique restaurants other places to enjoy new experiences with.
