Dr. Crystal Smith is the division head of orthopaedic surgery at Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital. Originally from the Maritimes, Dr. Smith went to medical school in Calgary, completed her residency at Queen’s University, completed two fellowships for upper extremity focuses, and worked in British Columbia for a year before joining Markham Stouffville Hospital 14 years ago.
She currently works primarily on shoulders as they are the most commonly seen upper extremity injury, but she also does some elbow and wrist repair as well.
“I have always enjoyed the hands-on nature of surgery – being able to fix something and see people get better as a result is what makes my job so rewarding.”
Dr. Smith chose to specialize in orthopaedic surgery as athletics have always been a big part of her life. Fun fact: Dr. Smith played varsity basketball all throughout college and university!
When she is not fixing broken bones, Dr. Smith remains as active as she can, although during the pandemic some of her activities have been put on hold. She enjoys playing soccer and tennis, and continues her passion for hoops playing in a ladies basketball league.
