Surgery for children

Location and Contact

Dr. Bear Program

Location: Markham Stouffville Hospital: Unit 4WF, room B4611, building B, top floor
Hours: Wednesday evenings (must preregister to attend) at 4:30 p.m.

At Oak Valley Health's Markham Stouffville Hospital, we want our smallest surgical patients and their families to have a positive experience. We support children and their families during surgical experiences by providing the expertise of a child life specialist as well as the Dr. Bear program. If your child is getting ready for surgery, Dr. Bear will help him or her understand and know what to expect. This support decreases anxiety and will leave your child with a positive memory of their experience with us.

In order to focus our attention on your child who is having surgery, we are unable to invite siblings to the Dr. Bear Program. However, you and your child’s other parent/guardian are welcome to join the program.

To register, please call your child's surgeon's office.

In the event your child experiences some behaviour difficulties after surgery, please contact our child life specialist at 905-472-7373 ext. 6408.

If your child is preparing for surgery, they can play the 'I'm Thirsty' game to make sure to drink enough water.
